Red Oak Consulting spent a year on a nationwide tour of leading utilities to create an environment for learning, sharing and exploring the most pressing issues in our industry today and the innovative solutions that are possible. This program was titled “Views from the Lunchroom” as it was our goal to capture the spirit and conversation that takes place every day during those breaks between formal meetings. This is where some great ideas live.
Our journey continues this year with VISIONS From the Lunchroom, the natural evolution of moving discovery into planning and actions. Join us as we discuss The Medici Effect and managing across intersections for successful utility performance.

Spent a great week in Chicago attending the Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE) of the American Water Works Association (AWWA). Having been a member of the Association since 1989, this was my 23rd consecutive year participating in the conference.
Since my first conference in Los Angeles and every year since, this has always been one of the ...Read More →

John is the CEO of Advanced Data Mining International, LLC.
I wish to comment relative to Sandra Ralston and Jim Ginley’s excellent article in the May Journal AWWA regarding their conversations with utility managers. I read the utilities’ concerns about financial matters and, as I also hear this frequently, I wanted to ...Read More →

This year’s conversations are an evolution of our 2009 “Views from the Lunchroom.” Riding on the momentum of the action themes that we distilled from last year’s issues and solutions, we wanted those themes to push forward the visions of the future that managers have for their utilities. But how best to make those conversations ...Read More →

As management consultants, we leave no stone unturned to discover possible solutions to the challenges of our clients. Even if it means we must go back in history to the 15th century!
“The Medici Effect,” a book by Frans Johansson, refers to the cultural, artistic, and intellectual flourishing that colors our view of the Renaissance. The ...Read More →

Hello again! A little bit more than one year ago, we launched the Views from the Lunchroom (VFL) program in Allentown, PA. At the time, we declared our intentions to not only have a number of discussions in the coming year, but to also culminate that year of discussions with a report and a presentation ...Read More →

In 2010, we have plans to hold as many as ten more Views from the Lunchroom sessions across the country. Some of these locations will be places we missed the first year and others will be repeat locations where we’ve been requested to return to continue the conversation.

Greetings! I hope your new year is off to a good start.
Here at Red Oak, we have been furiously preparing a summary report of our findings from the inaugural season of Views from the Lunchroom. In 2009, we met with more than 100 utility managers – and the conversations were rich with thoughts and ideas, ...Read More →

With the year nearing its end, we ventured off to the Dayton, OH area for the last “Views from the Lunchroom” discussion of 2009. It seems hard to believe that our journey started nearly 12 months ago in Lehigh County, PA. Since that time, we have eaten talked with well over 100 utility professionals from ...Read More →

The upper northwest corner of South Carolina is referred to as “Upstate”. Just east of the Appalachian mountains of this region, you’ll find farms, rolling hills, thick forests, and meandering rivers and streams that are far removed from the palm trees, Spanish moss, beaches, and colonial charm of some of the other (and perhaps better ...Read More →
